I wish you enough

Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter's departure had been announced. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said "I love you and I wish you enough".
The daughter replied, "Mum, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough too Mum".
They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I sat. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good bye to someone knowing it would be forever?"
"Yes I have", I replied. "Forgive me for asking but why is this a forever goodbye?"
"I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is the next trip back will be for my funeral," she said.
"When you were saying goodbye I heard you say'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?" I asked.
She began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone". She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more.
"When we said 'I wish you enough' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them". Then turning towards me she shared the following, reciting it from memory.
"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final goodbye".  She then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person. An hour to appreciate them. A day to love them. And an entire life to forget them.

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,

"Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,
Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn,
But only one mother the wide world over."
-- George Cooper

A mother is the truest friend we have,

"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts." -- Washington Irving (1783-1859)

A Bouquet for Mother

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the kerb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, " I wanted to buy a red rose for my mum but I only have seventy five cents, and a red rose costs two dollars".
The man smiled and said, " come with me and I will buy you a red rose".
He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers.
As they were leaving the florists he offered the little girl a lift home. She said "yes please, you can take me to my mum".
She directed him to a cemetery where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave. The man returned to the flower shop, cancelled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house.

A Child's Angel

Once upon a time, there was a child ready to be born.He asked God:"They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"
God: "Among the many angels, I chose one especially for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you."
Child: "But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything else but sing and smile, and that's enough for me to be happy. Will I be happy there?"
God: "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. You will feel your angel's love and be happy."
Child: "How am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language that men talk?
God: "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear. With much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."
Child: "And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"
God: "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."
Child: "I've heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?"
God: "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking her own life."
Child: "But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."
God: "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you.
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard.
The child, in a hurry, asked softly:"Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's name."
God: " You will call your angel ... Mummy."

Things My Mother Taught Me

My Mother taught me LOGIC...
"Because I said so, that's why."

My Mother taught me MEDICINE...
"If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they're going to freeze that way."

My mother taught me FORESIGHT...
"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident."

My mother taught me to APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE...
"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning!"

My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL...
"If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week!"

My Mother taught me INTUITION...
"Put your sweater on; don't you think that I know when you're cold?"

My Mother taught me to MEET A CHALLENGE...
"What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you... Don't talk back to me!"

My Mother taught me HUMOR...
"When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me."

My mother taught me RELIGION....
"You better pray that stain will come out of the carpet."

My mother taught me about my ROOTS...
"Do you think you were born in a barn?"

My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY...
"If I've told you once, I've told you a million times - Don't exaggerate!!!"

My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS....
"Shut your mouth and eat your supper!"

My mother taught me IRONY....
"Keep crying and I'll give you something to cry about!"

My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION...
"Just wait until your father gets home."

My mother taught me about STAMINA....
"You'll sit there until all that spinach is finished."

My mother taught me about JUSTICE...
"One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like YOU... then you'll see what it's like."

And she thought no one was listening!
