It starts with the fact that here in Britain and Ireland we wanted an extra long holiday and so Boxing Day was added onto Christmas day in order to extend our Celebrations. It is a national holiday and one to spend with family and friends and a day to eat the leftovers. Its origins however are steeped in history and tradition.
- A Christmas Box in Britain is a name for a Christmas present.
- Boxing Day was a day off for servants and they received a Christmas Box from the master.
- The servants would go home on Boxing Day
- A box to collect money for the poor was placed in Churches on Christmas Day and then opened the next day.
